General Phone Configuration

As there are a very large number of new telephones and adapters being introduced all the time and we can't give full details of them all, we provide the general settings for any SIP phone below.

The names of the individual settings are often different so we've included the more common ones.

Setup for Multi-User Accounts - If You Use Our PBX Service

Username/Account/SIP ID/Authenticate ID/Authorised User = your Voipfone account number (the 8-digit number starting with 3) followed by star and your 3-digit extension number.

Password/PIN = your phone extension password (usually a 6-digit number). Passwords for all your extensions can be found on the Virtual PBX / PBX Extensions page of your Control Panel.

SIP Server/Proxy/Registrar = sip.voipfone.net

SIP Server/Proxy/Registrar Port = 5060

Outbound proxy = sip.voipfone.net

Registration expiry/Proposed expiry = 1 minute or 60 seconds

Other settings should be left at default.

Setup for Single User Accounts - If You Don't Use Our PBX Service

Username/Account/SIP ID/Authenticate ID/Authorised User = your Voipfone account number (the 8-digit number starting with 3).

Password/PIN = your phone password (usually a 6-digit number). If you don't know your password, it can be found on the Master Account / Phone Settings page of your Control Panel.

SIP Server/Proxy/Registrar = sip.voipfone.net

SIP Server/Proxy/Registrar Port = 5060

Outbound proxy = sip.voipfone.net

Registration expiry/Proposed expiry = 1 minute or 60 seconds

Other settings should be left at default.

Test Numbers

155 - Confirms that your phone is connecting to our service and registering correctly.

152 - Echo test; shows how good your connection to Voipfone is.

You may have to fiddle around a bit if you've got a particularly esoteric device but any standards based, SIP hardware will work on our network. If you're really stuck please email us with as much information as you can and we'll try to sort it out for you.

Please note: We are constantly introducing new features and functions that often rely on your equipment being up to date to work properly so we recommend that you check the manufacturer's web site for firmware upgrades for your telephone or adapter.

You should use the most recent, full release on their site. Try not to use beta software as it may not work with Voipfone (for example, if you have a problem with Message Waiting Indication (MWI) this is often caused by not having firmware installed that supports it properly).

Hardware Telephones

Hardware Telephones

To get the most out of internet telephony, particularly if you are using it for business, it's best to use the new generation of VoIP (SIP) telephones or for the home user that does not require the features and functionality of a hardware phone we would recommend a VoIP adaptor.

They don't need your PC to be switched on or use PC resources and they deliver higher voice quality with more functionality than softphones.
